
Thorpeness Meare A ideal place for children of all ages
Thorpeness Meare is a large, shallow boating lake situated within 60 acres of picturesque landscape, with over 40 acres of open water. Nowhere deeper than three feet, the Meare offers a safe environment for boating, especially for families with young children.
Dogs on the Meare
Well behaved dogs are welcome on the Meare and are often see in the boats. We do ask that owners keep their dogs under control so as not to disturb the wildlife or other visitors and we do reserve the right to refuse entry if this is not the case.
Boating for Everyone
Many of the boats are original to the Meare’s 1913 opening and are lovingly restored each winter, preserving the traditional character and charm that make the Meare a timeless experience.

June 11th 1913 - Opening of Thorpeness Meare. The two boats in the picture, Shamrock and Stephanotis, are still in use today.
This legacy is not only preserved through the boats, but also through annual community traditions and continued family stewardship.

Opening Times
Thorpeness Meare is open daily from 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM starting from the Easter holidays until the end of the October half-term. Last boat hire is at 5:00 PM.
Pricing Details
Boat hire costs vary depending on boat size and the number of passengers. Children under 12 receive a 50% discount (excluding sailing boats).
Note: Boats cannot be booked in advance, but with a large fleet available, there's usually something for everyone.
